Paraklesis Service to the Mother of God | Tradition Explained

What is it? 

A service with prayers to the Mother of God. 

Why pray the Paraklesis?

We are asking our sweetest Mother, the Theotokos, to pray for us to her Son and to give us strength, comfort and support. This service allows you to bring all your stresses, hopes, failures and difficulties for you or others and to offer a supplication to God through His Mother’s intercession.

The importance of the Virgin Theotokos in the Orthodox Church explains the importance of this Supplicatory Canon to her. The Mother of God, Panagia, is the closest to Jesus Christ; she loves her Son and loves all of humanity more than any other human being. She is our Spiritual Mother and we believe she will help us by praying for us - all we need to do is ask.

When do I pray the Paraklesis?

Anytime that works for you! 

Morning, afternoon, evening; times of need, illness, anxiety; when you want to pray for others, for yourself or for the world.

Orthodox Christians may pray the Paraklesis everyday. Particularly during the August 15-day fasting period, in preparation for the Virgin Mary’s Dormition (August 15th), the Paraklesis can be prayed daily. 

How long does it take?

20-30 minutes.

Do I chant it or read it?

This service is usually chanted in churches, but you don’t need any musical background to pray the Paraklesis at home … read away!

Does there need to be a priest?

No. If you are praying the Paraklesis without a priest simply skip the priest’s parts in the service.
